What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is an official certificate issued by a designated government authority that authenticates a document for use in another country. Under the Hague Convention of 1961, an apostille is recognized by all member states, eliminating the need for further embassy or consular legalization. In Israel, apostilles are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the courts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an apostille and when do you need one?
An apostille is an official government certificate that authenticates a document for use in another country that is a member of the Hague Convention (over 120 countries). You need an apostille whenever a foreign authority — such as an embassy, university, employer, or government agency — requires proof that your Israeli document is genuine. Common situations include immigration applications, enrolling in a university abroad, international business transactions, and registering civil status events in another country.
How much does apostille service cost in Israel?
The cost depends on the type of document and whether translation or notarization is also required. A standard apostille for a single pre-translated document starts at approximately 350–500 ILS. If you also need certified translation and notarization, the total typically ranges from 600–1,200 ILS depending on the document’s complexity and language pair. We provide a detailed quote within a few hours after reviewing your document — the assessment is always free.
How long does the apostille process take?
The standard processing time at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is 3–5 business days. However, with our express service, we can obtain an apostille in as little as 1–2 business days. If you also need translation and notarization beforehand, add 1 business day for that step. From start to finish, most clients receive their fully apostilled documents within 5–7 business days using the standard track.
What documents can be apostilled in Israel?
Almost any official document issued in Israel can receive an apostille. This includes birth, marriage, divorce, and death certificates; educational diplomas and transcripts; court orders and judgments; notarized documents and powers of attorney; corporate documents such as articles of incorporation and tax certificates; and criminal background checks. The document must first be either a government-issued original or a notarized copy.
What is the difference between an apostille and legalization?
An apostille is a simplified, single-step authentication recognized by all Hague Convention member states (120+ countries). Legalization (also called consular authentication) is a multi-step process required for countries that are not members of the Hague Convention. Legalization typically involves authentication by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs followed by verification at the destination country’s embassy or consulate in Israel. It takes longer and costs more than an apostille. We handle both processes end to end.
Do I need a notarized translation before getting an apostille?
It depends on the destination country’s requirements. Many countries require that the document be translated into their official language by a certified translator and notarized before the apostille is applied. In Israel, a notary public certifies that the translation is accurate, and the apostille is then placed on the notarized translation. We advise you on the exact requirements for your destination country and handle the entire chain — translation, notarization, and apostille — as a single service.
